On Feb. 16, ILWU Local 10 shut down the Ports of Oakland and San Francisco to demand freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal and justice for Tyre Nichols. Now the union is hosting a live stream program, “Bearing Witness in the Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal” featuring Rev. Judge Wendell Griffen, retired state Court Trial Judge, Arkansas. Judge Griffen states flatly that current law requires that Abu-Jamal be released. “The prosecution messed up, the investigation messed up, and Mumia Abu-Jamal was wrongfully prosecuted, wrongfully convicted, wrongfully sentenced and is now wrongfully incarcerated,” says Griffen.

The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 11 at the ILWU Local 10 union in the Henry Schmidt room. It will begin with a report from the union delegation recently sent to South Africa to garner support from South African unions for political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal, a former Black Panther and award-winning journalist. General Secretary Irvin Jim of South Africa’s largest union, the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) written an Open Letter to Judge Lucretia Clemons who is hearing Mumia’s Post Conviction appeal in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. The ILWU and the International Dockworkers Council (IDC) has appealed to unions in African countries and has gathered support and letters to Judge Clemons from NUMSA and Revolutionary Transport Union in South Africa, Benin, Senegal and Togo. 

After the ILWU report, the panel taking place live in Philadelphia at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown, will be live streamed at the ILWU Hall. 

Renowned  philosopher and theologian, Dr. Cornel West; historian Dr. Johanna Fernandez who arranged for Brown University to take Abu-Jamal’s papers; Pedro Polakoff, first photographer on the crime scene in 1981 whose photographs definitively disprove key parts of the prosecution’s case; Gabriel Bryant, Philadelphia based organizer and Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, author and professor of media studies at Temple University will follow Judge Griffen on the panel. Linn Washington Jr., Professor of Journalism at Temple University, an award winning journalist who has covered Abu-Jamal’s case for four decades will moderate.
